报告人简介:Robert West was born in New Jersey, USA, and educated at Cornell (B.A.) and Harvard Universities (A. M., Ph. D.) He joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin in 1956, became full professor in 1962 and E.G. Rochow professor in 1969. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the A. von Humboldt Prize, the Main Group Chemistry Medal, the Frederic Stanley Kipping Award, the Wacker Silicon Prize and many others. In 2007 he founded the corporation, Silatronix Inc., to develop high-quality organosilicon electrolytes for lithium ion batteries. (Prof. West has more than 750 scientific publications and 40 patents.)

报告摘要:Muons are subatomic particles of antimatter with a short lifetime of 2.2 microseconds. They can be generated at a powerful proton accelerator and then captured by addition to unsaturated molecules. The resulting free radicals can be observed as they undergo decay. Recent work in West’s Laboratories has extended this research to new families of compounds, including low-valent Si, Ge and P atoms. This is a new field of chemistry and awaits our exploration.
